A unique combination of student doctor and sound engineer college buddy, makes Naxxos a truly toxic and magical alchemy. Since experimenting with various genres, the duo have now locked in their trademark, genre-splitting sound that makes for a simply stunning EP offering. Out on Le Sofa, 'Animal' is a heady mix of future bass, trap, future house and melodic pop.
The pair, Chris and Max, from Austria, made music together to vent their creativity in secondary school. Despite making drum & bass, melodic house and garnering international success with pioneering tropical house track New Orleans, the pair found themselves feeling stuck in a bubble of making music set in one scene.
“At one point, we just said fuck it, and tried something new,” explains Chris. “That was the turning point for making this EP. We’ve made it our rule to always evolve our music. This way, we feel we can go anywhere without getting stuck again. The essence of our songs remain the same: melodic, lots of knocks and percussive elements.”
The result of trying something new means Naxxos are embarking on a sound that straddles many genres, without conforming to any single one. This year, Naxxos have released three breakthrough tracks: 'Thief', 'Paper Tiger' and 'Not Alone'. The title track, 'Anima', features the sassy vocals of Dionne Bromfield and encapsulates a soulful sensibility with crisp beats that catapult the track into the realm of future bass. 'Who Do You Love' featuring Raphaella brings the tropical element, tinged with trap, then switches it up with some ‘80s inspired sounds. But it’s on 'Got Me Waiting' featuring Kate Garné that Naxxos brings melodic house and summer pop to the fore with sparkling production and unstructured melodies.
