During almost three decades of their career, Swedish metal legends In Flames established themselves as one of the powerhouses of the genre. With personal and stylistic changes, they explored many different genres from death and melodic death metal to more alternative sound. With the last few records band incorporated more electronic and synthetic influences in their music, bringing more modern and futuristic elements in favor of more traditional and old-school approach.

With new EP 'Down, Wicked & No Good' In Flames continued to explore the influences present in their last records, making it kind of logical successor of 2016 record 'Battles.' With four new songs, actually, four new covers, In Flames are exploring dark, emotional and slower side of music, something that may not be so expected, but yet it works so well.

Their take on Depeche Mode's legendary 'It's No Good' gives justice to the original, keeping its slow, depressive and dark mood, but giving it more edge. Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' received a similar treatment, becoming emotional as it was, but even darker, and somehow colder.

'Down in a Hole' by Alice in Chains possibly received the biggest makeover. Yes, the dark and depressive vibe is still there, but lead by piano, and even slower than the original, it sounds more synthetic, more out of this world. EP finishes with the live cover of 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails, and more recently Johnny Cash. This cover somehow finds its place somewhere in between two versions, levitating somewhere between Cash's pure emotion, and Reznor's devastated and depressive scream for help.

I will not compare these covers to the originals or try to rate them better or worse. Their intention is not to be any of those. On these four songs, we have a legendary band paying respect to their influences and role models, by covering the songs they love. It's for us to take it or leave it. I'll know I'm definitely taking it.
