Artist: Dub Pistols Release: Crazy Diamonds Genre: Dub / Electronica Label: Sunday Best Records Release date: October 27th, 2017 Verdict: 8/10
For the last twenty-one years, Dub Pistols established themselves as one of the most important names in the UK underground scene. Over the course of seven albums, the band fronted by Barry Ashworth explored many genres including dub, reggae, hip-hop, and electronica. This October, the London-based mob is back with a new record 'Crazy Diamonds.'
You can't really say you've listened to Dub Pistols if you haven't seen them live. This is probably the best thing about this record - 'Crazy Diamonds' manages to catch the insane energy Dub Pistols spread on their live shows, and put it on tape. Or vinyl, binary code, whatever is your preference. This eleven-song release is full of bangers, guest appearances, and positive vibes. Although the band did touch on some serious topics and explore some dark subjects, the overall vibe of the record is positive and optimistic. Dipping their fingers into dance music as much they did in hip-hop or reggae, Dub Pistols did what they do best. Guests like Too Many T's, Ragga Twins, Lindy Layton and Seanie T further add to the album's diversity making it a perfect treat for genre-blending fans.
'Crazy Diamonds' may not be experimental or fresh as some of their previous works, but it's still a good record with all of the Dub Pistols' signature elements. The record offers a massive amount of energy, some intelligent lyricism, and genre-breaking music that can hardly leave you standing still. I couldn't ask for more.
